How To Treat Whiplash Injuries

Even though there are many advanced tests for whiplash injuries they are not definitive, even if your Doctor cannot detect whiplash when you feel pain following a collision accident of any type, that doesn’t mean you are not affected. Symptoms of whiplash is not limited to simple neck pain either. Radiating pain in the arms, numbness of fingers or arms, dizziness and headaches are just a few of the symptoms.

Some others that may not seem related, but if they follow a collision accident are signs of whiplash injuries include lower back pain, irritability, problems sleeping and excessive fatigue, decreased range of motion in the neck, shoulders or back, and even temporomandibular joint pain (jaw pain also known as TMJ). These signs can occur moments following a crash, or even days afterwards.

When to See Your Doctor

Ideally you should see your Doctor immediately following an accident, even if you think you are uninjured. The pain of an accident can be delayed by shock or because the muscles haven’t tightened in response to tearing or stress. If you delayed seeing your Doctor and pain starts, make an appointment immediately, and then discuss your injuries with a Solicitor.

Just Because You Can Move Doesn’t Mean You Don’t Have Whiplash

In fact, following the standard muscle strain treatment including ice over 24 hours along with massage and then heat for the next three weeks, doctors now recommend you try and keep moving as much as your body will allow. Even if the activity is just walking to keep your body in motion, you need to stay moving. Staying in bed can actually make it take longer to heal, because the muscles stiffen up, and tighten further, making it even harder to move.

Your Doctor may prescribe pain killers such as over-the-counter aspirin, or prescription strength opoids to help you deal with the pain. When your whiplash injuries persist you may require spinal injections or chiropractic care. All of these treatments are expensive, and you should be reimbursed for those costs as well as lost time from work, vehicle replacement and pain and suffering.

Dealing with Insurance Companies

Insurance companies will try to deny whiplash as non-existent. That is because it is in their best interests to do so, but they should not be allowed to get away with it. It can take days, weeks, months and even years to recover from whiplash injuries.

Do not attempt to contact the insurance companies on your own – you may end up with nothing, or a ridiculously low settlement.

Watch out for claims management companies too. These companies take the information and fill out the paperwork to start your whiplash claims. However, they do not deal with the insurance companies directly. Their sole purpose is to choose from a number of solicitors to find the best one for them. They get paid by the solicitor for providing your case to them. They, in effect, choose your solicitor for you based on payment, not on quality.
